    Hey guys,

I’m using the Maillist module and I noticed you can only save the email address.
I want to include a field called “Full name” aswell, so it got me thinking.

Is there any way I can edit the module to add this field, or am I better of by taking a different approach?

    Thanks!

Anyone? Is there any way to add stuff to an existing module without risking it to dissappear after an update.

    Bump bump

Surely there has to be an expert who knows the answer, which I would appreciate greatly.

There is no way to do this with the default mailing list; the way to handle this, if you need that information, is to have your people register as members where you can set up as many custom member fields as needed.

Thanks for the kind reply Lisa.

Well that’s the problem, I’m going to have a member based website but my client wants to have this “temp. page” where we display some information about that site and the visitors can subscribe to a newsletter with which we can update them about the evolution of the site etc. And I wanted to do this with the existing module, as I don’t want to re-invent water =)

I have good knowledge of PHP so I can probably edit the module to add a new field. Do you think it’s a good idea? What about future updates for example, I don’t want it to be overwritten.

    Thanks

Well, doing that would be a hack; you will then need to track that hack, and re-apply it to future updates.  Furthermore, if you hack the mailing list module we may ask you to revert before receiving support.

There are feature requests for this that you could add your voice to as well.

You are right. If I only had to do this hack, it wouldn’t be a big problem to track. But for my task I have to customize a lot of things and add several new things into existing modules/plugins.

I absolutely love EE for everything it has to offer, but now I’m facing a dilemma. I don’t really want to use another CMS system.

You could use Constant Contact, or Campaign Monitor; both have add-ons to integrate with EE.
