I’m in the process of putting together technical details on how I would build a site with an integrated directory. I think EE is a great solution but I’m not sure of the best approach for doing this.

I was shown by the client this directory solution,

    http://www.phpmydirectory.com/demo/index.php

but I didn’t recommend this for a full featured site with a directory so I suggested we build something like this up in EE 2.

How much of this is possible with EE? Am I being a little over ambitious? I haven’t been able to find a directory addon for EE so I guess I need to build this up within EE. Can’t I just use categories within EE to simulate categories in phpmydirectory. What about location based browsing, would I use more categories?

Another feature I would need is the ability to import bulk data into the system. Maybe a few hundred records.

I would also need to be able to allow users to add their own listings and the ability to pay for them.

I’m interested in hearing how others might approach building this into an EE site. Paying for add-ons is not a problem so I’m happy to buy add-ons to get the functionality I need.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.
