Hi!
This has been asked before, but no answer made me happy.
I like minimal, I don’t need tons of feature’s, simple does it for me.
So, my quest is to find a minimal editor for coding, and my wishlist is quite small:
- basics like duplicate/delete entire line,
- CRUD files/dirs via a ftp-connection
- maybe some syntax highlighting
I think there are some lightweight editors out there, but without ftp.
Is there a good workaround for this? Maybe some good mount-ftp-to-a-dir software?
I don’t mind paying for good software and don’t care if it runs on *nix or windows 😊

In my Windows days I always used UltraEdit for development. Tons of features, but they’re not in the way if you don’t need them.

gedit ftw! it ticks all your boxes and is light, fast and has an impressive range of plugins

Notepad++ is THE editor for windows. You can extend it via plugins(for example FTP Synchronize) to meet your needs. One “must” plugin is the Zen-coding which speeds up develping quite nicely.

I echo the previous two posters’ suggestions. You mentioned having a bad experience with Notepad++, so I would give Gedit a try. It had a myriad of plugins that allow you add more functionality and make it a full fledged IDE albeit still retaining the simple and lightweight nature of the editor.

I’ve used Crimson http://www.crimsoneditor.com/ on Windows quite a bit, opens files on remote, and is pretty lightweight, has some basic syntax highlighting, does a few nice editing tricks that I generally use Textmate on Mac for.

Just my tuppence worth, good lock with your search.

Ok, a somewhat late reply, but I took my time to test some editors 😊

WanWizard: Indeed, TONS of features, the bars freaked me out 😛
I did some cleaning, didn’t work properly, cant remove all bars.
The file/ftp browser is nice, only got some annoying “would you like this file in format x?” popups…
Gonna try this editor for some days, if I like it (and get super-clean), I get myself a license 😊

eoinmcg: Gedit - I can’t find ftp-functions in the windows version. Search told me that it is linux only, I go figure this out.
It’s free, simple, opensource, free, and free. I like 😊

osfan: Crimson, looks OK. Sadly, I cannot browse ftp as I can browse trough my filesystem.

cahva: Well ok, I installed notepad++ once again and manually inserted the ftp-sync plugin (why is this plugin not availble in the manager??)
It seems to work, the connection is stable and I didn’t lose my work after editing a file for 15 minutes.
And I watched the zencoding video… nice! I definitely going to play around with that ^_^

For now, I’ll continue testing gedit, ultraedit and notepad++

Heh didnt read carefully enough your first post where you said that you had problems with ftp synchronize in notepad++. I too remember some problems with it, but usually the problems were due to upgrading the program which made the ftp unstable. Atleast with more recent versions I’ve had no problems with the FTP.

Just try ‘vim’, its great its fast + its not bloated
once you get used to it you’ll love it!!
