I purchased EE Beta 2.0 last week along with the forums mod. So far EE isn’t too hard for a noob like myself. The forums on the other hand make me want to cry.

Looking at the code it creates takes me back to the early 2000’s (<tr><td>). Keep in mind I was playing with the default theme but correct me if I’m wrong, all the themes the forums come with have old school ways of doing things. No way (in my book) is this acceptable for today’s standards.
So I tried googling for some up to date themes to see how others are doing it and no such luck.

    The documentation…

    http://expressionengine.com/public_beta/docs/modules/forum/forum_global_variables.html

is lack luster for a new user like myself, where I would like to have more of a description about each of the forum global variables. Also if I want the forum to end up in the main div of my site template there are no examples on how to do that. I’m 100% lost on this and I’ve tried to look for posts on this or google other sites out there that have forum themes (which I can’t find.) Sorry for ranting but I’m trying to learn as much as I can as fast as I can.

    Hi, guruabyss,

You could certainly create your own theme; I’d recommend looking at Design > Themes > Forum themes to see how it is all laid out.  Or you can modify the theme in /themes/forum_themes/theme_name.  I’d recommend copying to your own theme so that you don’t over-write changes during software updates.

The MInimalism Theme would be a good option to start with to create a table-less design.  There is also this thread which may have some information for you.

If you wish to run the forums through the main template engine, see Other Features and the {exp:forum} tag.
