The docs make it sound very quick and easy to move an EE site to a new server.  I really don’t like my client’s host, and was thinking about switching to the company I typically use with all my clients.

Before I try moving from what this client already has, I was wondering what people who have done it thought.  Did anyone run into any major problems upfront or have conflicts/problems pop up weeks or months later?

    Very easy indeed.

Setting up the urls with htaccess is the only problem iv really come across, but that isnt really due to swapping the site, its just a server set up / host issue.

It is fairly easy, you just need to be methodical in your approach, and take your time.

I’ve just done this - moving a site on a development server to a client’s server.
    My advice would be:

    1) Follow the instructions carefully - you might want to read about this subject in the book “Building Web sites with ExpressionEngine 1.6”

    2) When you’ve made the change, don’t forget to check all of the URL and path settings in the CP on the new server to ensure that they match the new server location. Pay particular attention to paths to upload directories if you’ve created them.

Like TheStig, the issues I had were getting a .htaccess file to work with the client’s server, but that’s not related to ExpressionEngine.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards

My biggest tip would be have a list of all the paths you need to update and make sure you tick them off as you go.

Don’t forget to install the excellent Deeploy Helper module from Hop Studios to help with the migration.

Deeploy Helper is invaluable in migrating sites.

I’ve done it a couple of times (without the helper), and never had any problems, except that I tend to forget a path setting here or there. So, check those paths, and then doublecheck them! 😉
