    Hi all,

Generally when I do a new site (w/o ExpressionEngine) when there is an existing site in place, if I don’t have a separate testing server, I’ll put the new site in a subfolder with relative links and move it to the root when it’s approved.

With ExpressionEngine, if I were to install to a subfolder, can I move it when finished and still log in to the /system directory and change the paths? Is there a protocol for this sort of thing? Best practice?

    Thanks!

Yes, you definitely can and very easily.  You’ll need to be sure to change all the paths, as you said - and everything will work great.

I find deeploy helper pretty handy for migrations like this.  There are also a checklist in the wiki you might want to look at.

I like to take the “system offline” while I update the paths.  This is in Admin ›  System Preferences ›  General Configuration.  If you want to update the “system offline” template it is in Admin ›  Specialty Templates ›  System Offline Template.
