I did a search on the forums and found some topics about calendars in EE, but I do not understand if calendars are a module in EE or is it a separate pluggin and/or purchase.

Does EE come with a calendar module?  Is there a help topic about them?

If not can someone suggest an easy to implement calendar.  We would like to create a calendar to show classes offered.

There isn’t a calendar “module” per se, but calendaring is built into EE. Please look here:

It’s really quite flexible.

I want to use the calendar module to create an events calendar, but I don’t want to use the existing weblog on my site as I post all sorts of stuff there. Can I create a second weblog and title it events and then use the mini calendar? Will that mess up my existing weblog?
