I’ve been playing around with the Discussion Forum Module and my first concern was limiting access to it while it is being developed/setup. I have setup a user group called “Forum Management” which contains all the members who will be working to get the Forum up and running but the issue I’m having is how I can allow them to see the entire Board while limiting access to everyone else.

Is it possible to allow users/groups other than Super Admins to view the Forum Board when it is set to disabled? If not, are there any other simple ways (aside from htaccess and such) to limit access within the context of EE?

Also, another quick question, I think I’ve seen it somewhere before but is there a conditional statement that will show a link only to users that have permission to access the Admin CP?

    Thanks again!

Matt, there are a few ways you can handle this. One method would be to run your forum through templates. EEDocs

Send the member groups you don’t want to be able to access the forum to a template with a coming soon notice.

Then when you’re ready to launch the forums, let them back in again.

    Does that help?

If I’m not mistaken though, were someone to type in the triggering word into their browser they would still be able to access the Forum Board would they not (even if I am running the Forum through templates)? Like if my triggering word is “secret” and someone type the url “http://mysite.com/secret/” then they would still see the Forum Board wouldn’t they?

I understand that I could change my triggering word to something random but that’s really just security through obscurity… I’m looking for a way to allow/disallow access for the Forum Board completely based on usergroup. I know that using the permissions settings I can control access to specific Forums but I am looking for that same type of control for the entire Forum Board, just curious if it’s possible? Or at least to allow usergroups other than Super Admins to view the Forum Board while it is set to disabled/offline?

Also any thoughts on the second question?

No, because there is no trigger word when running your forum through a regular template, you leave it empty.

I’m looking for a way to allow/disallow access for the Forum Board completely based on usergroup.

Everybody not logged in will be part of the “Guest” member group. Just don’t give them permissions to view any of your forums.

is there a conditional statement that will show a link only to users that have permission to access the Admin CP?

There is not. Of course you can use conditionals to only show links to certain usergroups, but you’d have to keep track of whether they may or may not access the control panel yourself.
