Posts not saving. Losing some new posts and some edits

We have EE v1.6.6 and started having a really bad problem where at random times when you hit Save, it takes you back to the CP Home page instead of the preview and whatever you were working on is just totally gone.

This happens both with new posts and when you are editing old posts. It doesn’t happen all the time.  For a while, it seemed like if we logged out and logged in every time before writing a new post, it would not do this, but that’s turning out to not be true.

Also, this seems to have happened after someone at our webhost did a bunch of stuff to our htaccess file and totally messed up the site and then someone else at the webhost theoretically put it back how it was after that.  So is there a chance that something to do with htaccess files could be doing this?

Its really really frustrating.  We have someone who kind of worked at a cheap rate to set up the site for us and doesn’t have much time to help, but if I could have some idea of where to look, he might be able to do more technical stuff if the fix is beyond me. But its really hard, cuz I have no idea what might be happening.

    Here’s our site: http://www.houstontomorrow.org

    Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the ExpressionEngine forums, gulfcoastinstitute.

We ordinarily don’t work with .htaccess changes to remove index.php - which is what I suspect may have happened here.

One other issue is that you’re a few versions behind. Ideally we’d prefer you upgrade before we start troubleshooting. Is that something you can do today?

Okay, I was wondering about that, but I don’t know how to update.  Is it something that can be done automatically through the backend or do I download the update and put it in all the right places sort of thing?

Take a look at the last link in my signature. That should help get you started.

Okay, so we have now updated to v1.6.8 and it seemed like the problem maybe went away, but then it started happening again yesterday.

Any ideas how I can start troubleshooting this?

    thanks,

What extensions do you have installed?

I’m not sure if you need all of this, but here are the modules we’re using:
    Comment
    Email
    Emoticon
    Freeform
    Mailinglist
    Member
    Query
    Referrer
    RSS
    Search
    Statistics
    Tag
    Trackback
    Section

I think the Tag one is the only 3rd party one that we’re paying for.

Also, this seems to have started happening after someone at our web host messed around with the htaccess and other files at that level on the server.  They totally messed up the site and then I called back and talked to someone else at the webhost and they theoretically “put everything back to where it was” but I don’t know if they did something wrong.

Also, we were having a problem with the webhost because of Apple IMAP accounts that they were cutting us off from too many requests of the server and you would get an error page at the site for a while.  Not sure if that’s relevant.

Greg asked about Extensions, you mentioned Modules. 😊

Again, troubleshooting .htaccess files is beyond the scope of what we do officially. I’m going to move this to the HowTo forum, where other members of the community can help.

The same thing goes for server settings, that also isn’t something we do in this particular forum. In the mean time, please post the contents of you .htaccess file, so if anyone has any ideas, they’ll be able to help.

gulfcoastinstitute - is this happening if you remove the .htaccess file temporarily?  That will let us know if that is in fact the culprit.
