I’d like to know if it’s possible to have EE’s core typography replace a super-common occurrence of text during parsing/rendering.

For example, if I had a website dealing with water, and the client would often type “H2O” is it possible to have EE’s engine catch any instance of “H2O” during parsing and replace it with the scientifically proper “H2O”?

If it’s possible, can someone demonstrate how this can be done (I’m a novice at PHP, but have gotten my hands dirty with success in the past).

I’d like to do this without plugins, since going back and adding the plugin call in all of the templates would be almost as much of a chore as editing the entries themselves at this point.

Obviously a plugin like Replace would be an option, but please pretend they don’t exist for the purpose of this experiment   😛

Have a look at the Acronym module from Solspace.com.

There isn’t a way to do this, short of pretty extreme hacking, without a module.

I wound up writing my own find-and-replace plugin to deal with this in the simplest way possible, since I realized there was likely no easy way to do this without wrapping tags in my templates.
