Say you want to make a site where you might need functionality that would take to long to write yourself.

Would you select the framework that has everything you might need, or would you focus on immediate needs and hope that you can manage if you need something that’s not in the framework. —Either by integrating something framework neutral or perhaps using different frameworks and having them appear as one site?

Would you perhaps select a “best of breed” approach from the beginning?

In my case I am looking at CodeIgniter because of the Cahoots framework.

I select a framework because it is designed well and not too bloated. Well that would be for a project I am writing from scratch. If it was just a quick one off, then I would pick something with the features I needed.

Hopefully with EE 2.0 and CI 2.0 we will get both in one. Can’t wait.

I think selecting a framework/CMS/libraries should not be done based on a single site. You should follow news about php frameworks. Check out frameworks, read the documentation, get your first impression, create a common app to get a second impression, store the impressions about the framework.

Then when a client introduces a concept you can choose what you need. After a while you will start favoring certain solutions.
