Has there been any mention of the pricing for the new release when it comes out?

I’m not so much bothered about specific figures, more so the overall pricing structure and if they will keep it as a one off purchase fee as oppose to a monthly fee like Basecamp or LightCMS?

Will a free core version still exist?

Only thing I’ve seen is that it will be more but within reason. I wouldn’t expect it to become subscription though. It will probably be more like when they went from pMachinePro to EE.

Have heard about the fate of a free (Core) version.

I think the price is very reasonable at present, any small increase will be fine, as long as it doesn’t change to a monthly subscription, the one off price is what the clients I have bought it for seem to really like about it.

I hope they still keep the free 1.6 core version running and available then, it’s been a great help in me getting to know EE better and subsequently recommending EE as a CMS to clients. I have a test site running on 1.6 that I use as an example CMS for them to log in and use to show them how easy it is to update a site. They have always liked it and proceeded to buy a license!

Of course, one man’s hamburger is another man’s steak. There needs to be some additional features to justify a higher price; not just a pretty GUI in the admin panel.

...long as it doesn’t change to a monthly subscription, the one off price is what the clients I have bought it for seem to really like about it.

While I don’t expect a monthly subscription, having that as an option might be worth considering on a per install basis (good for budget projections).

If EE 2.0 comes in at $300, a monthly subscription rate would be $25 or less for 12 months, perhaps $20 a month or less for 24 months, and so on.

There’s all kinds of payment management issues with subscription, though.

I hope they still keep the free 1.6 core version running and available then, it’s been a great help in me getting to know EE better and subsequently recommending EE as a CMS to clients.

Double amen and triple dittos to that. Core is a great way to get people on board the EE gravy train.

I’m sure they’ll keep the core free & open source.  Not sure if it’ll be 1.6 though.  It might be updated to the 2.0 core.

I’m thinking about buying EE within a week or so - should I hold off until the 2.0 launch? I mean, will I get a free update to 2.0 (presuming it is released within a year lol)?

    Thanks!

The answer is “No” to both questions: although there won’t be a free update, you shouldn’t hold off, either: the price to upgrade from EE 1.6 -> 2.0 will not exceed the difference of sale prices. In other words: it won’t make a difference in terms of money, but you’re likely to get a lot of experience before EE 2.0 is released.

Awesome - thanks Ingmar! Fantastic answer (do these board have “rep”?) I’ll get my coder on developing a theme for EE ASAP. 😊

Which brings up another question - stuff won’t “break” in terms of the theme working on the 1.6 -> 2.0 upgrade will it? I guess some of this stuff simply can’t be answered until the final build goes live, but based on my experience with Wordpress, I guess it wouldn’t. Just want to be sure before I drop a few grand on some dev work.

As mentioned in the sneak preview; this will be an update, not a migration.  Your templates won’t break, though third-party add-ons will necessarily be updated, so you’ll want to make sure you have the updated add-ons for 2.0 before going live.

1.6.x will still be supported and sold, there is no pressure to update to 2.0 the moment is comes out.
