Not sure if this is the right place to ask.  But I am wondering if I should make this part of EE available to members.  What are the advantages?  How is it commonly used?  Why not just let people use their regular email accounts?  Aren’t they more likely to check their email than their PM’s?
Is the bulletin something like a “wall” for announcements that members are sure to see whenever they go to the website?

Depends on your market space, but one advantage of using PM’s is your users will come back to the site. At which point you have them available for information, advert, breaking news and so on.

If they get an email, then they get another email and carry on with deleting spam and other chores. One thing I saw discussed on a vbulletin forum was if the pm notification email should contain the pm, some argued for and against. Personally I use the subject and sender with a teaser (first n letters)...

The user will then at some point return to the site and hopefully engage in community activities or learn / buy something, making the trip valued for either party 😊.

Plus users might not want to give out their personal email addresses and using PM’s is more anonymous.  But I think the reasons posted above are of more importance 😊.
