ive been playing with gmail as a main mail client for the last day or so (mainly because it can now import with pop and you can send out as those addresses) and i like it (im using fluid.app on a mac to make an SSB for it) but the one thing i hate is how it only checks those email addresses about once an hour or so. does anyone know of a grease monkey script or another tool that will force gmail to check say every 5 mins or so? if so please let me know

don’t know of any scripts to get gmail to check your other accounts more often. i also noticed that gmail won’t pull more than 200 messages at a time. that was a problem on one of my spam-magnet accounts that routinely got 3000 messages a day. eventually, i just switched to dreamhost. they partner with google. so you get gmail and google apps for your domain so the messages just go directly to google and there are no POP limitations. may not suit your needs.

fluid is nice. check out mailplane.app - it lets you put multiple gmail accounts in one app and manages it all for you through keychain. $25 but worth it if you more than a few gmail logins - works with google hosted domains too.

finally, check out my imap_pop library in the wiki. i’ve been using gmail’s POP with CI for two years now and it has worked perfectly!

the only problem is that im trying to use gmail with 5 additional email accounts all going into one inbox which is working great with the labels and filters. i wanna get away from the traditional desktop client (ive used and like mail.app and the postbox app) so that i can retain those messages online without importing / exporting those huge mailbox files. i would even pay somemthing so that gmail checks it faster.

i was thinking about running a cron on my email address that would send an email every three minutes or so and filtering it out to the trash, because gmail bases its checking interval on how much mail you get. so that would probably speed it up but its not ethical and is probably against the TOS of gmail
