    Small bit I got today…thought to share.
    Looks like we will be able to use:
    info link

    <!-- Mimic Internet Explorer 7 -->
      <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />
      <title>My Web Page</title>

    interesting enough I thought…
    download IE8 if you care.

    Seeing that, on several sites I built over the last 2 year, even basic stuff that worked in IE7 is now broken in IE8, that tag is gonna come in mighty handy.
    The only thing I’d like to know is if MS is going to make IE8 a forced update for all Vista and XP users… not really looking forward to years of testing in 3 flavours of IE 😖

    I thought at least it would be an easy fix to ‘fake out’ IE8 users until changes are made.

    About the update…well, looking at the track record I know that these versions will not co-exist.
    Hard to say but XP is more desired OS than Vista. I wish MS would at least sell XP with IE7.
    Many XP users just don’t bother to upgrade as long as their patches are coming down though IE6…which makes IE7 still an ‘optional’ update.
    It would be a massive task (from corp perspective) to ‘have to’ update to IE8 just to keep OS up to date…I would much rather they make IE7 a ‘must upgrade’.

    So…I am afraid yes, some level (from designer/dev perspective) of supporting for IE6 will remain.
    I have come to adopt “oh well, that doesn’t work but at least content is accessible” approach to IE6.
    😖 is right.

    I’m getting a page not found.

    I’m so tired of dealing with Microsoft that I want to spit. MSIE 6.x won’t die, MSIE 7.x should die, and it looks like MSIE 8 is stillborn.

    If Firefox and Safari and Opera and friends can build a browser that renders to standards with few quirks, then why can’t Microsoft do the same with all their billions of dollars?

    May Steve Ballmer run the company for another 20 years.

    This = copy/paste http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288325(VS.85).aspx
    Already a good start…way to build the URL MS.

    I think this is why Bill G. retired….could not make a decent browser 😛

    What a mess. The people who work there should be ashamed of what they do, the problems they cause, the reputation (deserved) they have.

    There are other ways to manipulate the browser experience. you can specify other versions. eg;

    <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=8;FF=3;Other=4" />

    By the way, the more I look at it, the more i question why you’d use ‘emulate’ tag at all when that can all be specified in the content with just what’s listed.

    The link to MSDN in your post doesn’t work. If you find it again let me know. i’d like to read up on the differences. I got my info from the W3 Schools site.

    EDIT: nevermind, I see the difference now. I found the info at this page. hopefully the link works.

    http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/06/10/introducing-ie-emulateie7.aspx

    in summary, IE7 compatibility support looks as follows: Content Value Details

    IE=7  Display in IE7 Standards mode; Already supported in the IE8 Beta 1 release

    IE=EmulateIE7  Display standards DOCTYPEs in IE7 Standards mode; Display quirks DOCTYPEs in Quirks mode; Available through the IE June Security Update for IE8 Beta 1

    FYI, IE8 is no longer beta or RC, and is available as a full release now.
