Good Mouse For Apple Mac OSX

As much as I love Apple stuff I have finally had it with my wireless mighty mouse, it’s heavy, the track ball ceased working a year ago and the grip of the product isn’t massively comfortable on a daily use basis, can be on my computer for over 10 hours some days. The right click doesn’t work 100% of the time. It is also not the most precise when working in App’s like Photoshop which can require quite a degree of skill. I think Apple got it wrong with this product and am fed up waiting for a new one to come out.

I need a new one, anyone got any recommendations? Not to bothered about price or manufacturer.

The main features I use and absolutely need in a new mouse are the side buttons on the mighty mouse, not sure if this is a Apple specific feature but I use it to launch Expose and use this feature consistently. I also need it to be wireless but not need to take up a usb port with an adapter or anything, needs to work straight out the box so to speak.

Had a look around as presumed this would be covered in fan boy blogs or something, but can’t find anything.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

A mouse is like a shoe. Whatever fits is what you want and everyone’s “foot” is a little different. So some experimentation is required, and it takes a little time to get used to a new mouse.

I’m on my Mac 10-12 hours a day and use, ta da, Mighty Mouse. I bought two when they came out and they still work perfectly. Tried the wireless MM at a client’s office one day for a few hours. No thanks. Too heavy. Prior to MM I used a variety of Microsoft’s mouse products, all decent and durable, but brick like compared to MM (and many LogiTech and others).

My only complaints about MM are the squeeze buttons, which are worthless, and finger drift, whereby my index finger will drift from the left click to the top of the mouse sometimes. Otherwise, I find the touch to be very good, precision is good, hand placement and movement is not restricted, and scrolling works wonderfully, considering the size of the nipple. Like any mouse, you have to keep it clean.

    No way! These are crucial!

They let me quickly go in between programs if I have a few windows open at the same time.

Each to their own I guess.

Yep. That’s why a mouse is like a shoe. Or, put another way, “One man’s CMS from heaven is another man’s dynamic nightmare.”

I’m a big fan of Logitech’s G5 gaming mouse (G7 is the cordless version), but I agree with above posters: mice are shoes, it really is a matter of personal preference.
Try before you I would say 😊

I love my Logitech MX Revolution.  I have one for my desktop, and I have the smaller one for my MacBook when I travel.  And after a recent experience, my love for this mouse extends from the hardware back to the company itself.  They’ve made me quite loyal.

And it’s somewhat related, but I use ControllerMate instead of Logitech’s native preference pane to control my programmable buttons.  The Logitech software for OS X leaves much to be desired, as it’s actually an Input Manager hack and can cause problems.  ControllerMate is a dream.

I’ve always liked the Microsoft Wireless mouse for notebooks.  They release a new model every year or so but the shape and basic functionality has stayed the same forever.  It’s a great mouse and quite cheap.  The only issue is that the wireless aspect isn’t bluetooth so it has a little dongle is ships with.  I think there is a wired version too which I use to use.  Either way the fit in my hand is perfect and its ambidextrous so my two left handed friends can use it also.

And actually I take that back, they do have a Bluetooth version of it now.  I may have to get myself one.

I have used the Microsoft wireless mouse for notebooks in the past. But when I lost that (long story), I decided to upgrade to the new Microsoft Explorer mouse . I am quite pleased with it. I just wish it were Bluetooth instead of USB.

At work I use a Logitech MX5500 - fantastic keyboard and an even better mouse. Unfortunately it’s only officially supported on Windows, however some people have had some success in getting it to work in Leopard.

One person seems to have had some success with the divice on a KVM switch, so if you’re a sysadmin you might have one lying around. 😊

It’s a great mouse, loads of buttons for macros. Two little buttons under my thumb let me scroll through layers in Photoshop.

I’m with Derek. I’m a huge fan and loyal customer to Logitech. I also use the Logitech MX Revolution. I have one that I use at work and because of that bought myself one for home. I will admit it might be a little spendy, but in my opinion is worth it.

Now, I use the Logitech software and haven’t had a problem at all with it. I love the flexibility of the buttons and wheels. The free scroll is awesome to scroll long documents. But I did change some settings to suit me, such as the little button on top for QuickLook rather than search.

I agree though, find a mouse that is comfortable and suits you. I find the wired mighty mouse usable when I have to, but too light. Where as that’s why RonnieMC likes it. I’d go down to Best Buy and just see how different mice feel. And then make a decision.

Derek, what does ControllerMate offer that the software from Logitech doesn’t? I’m curious, because if I’m missing out on a better mousing experience, I’ll give it a shot.

Well, it’s capable of nearly anything, any combination of mouse click, text output, etc. triggered from any action or combination of actions you see fit.  Per application settings, and so on, it’s ridiculously customizable.  I personally only use it for the basics - Expose, Spaces, Dashboard, Show Desktop, open links in tabs, etc.  The key, though, is that it is not an Input Manager.  Input Managers are hacks, and can cause all manner of problems, without warning.  It might only affect certain applications, or it might cause kernel panics, or prevent system updates from functioning properly.  If you Google for it,  you’ll find all manner of problems.  This blog post on my site describes the problem I was having, and how I landed on ControllerMate for my solution.  Hope it helps!

I almost bought a Logitech MX Revolution but the Mighty Mouse suddenly started working again!

I really wish Logitech would introduce a Bluetooth MX Revolution. I’d be on it in a heartbeat.

PS. You can also try SteerMouse to customise a Logitech mouse.

Thanks! I’ll check that out and see what’s what.

I also dream of the day this happens. But I wonder if it might be more of a drain on the battery and if logitech’s wireless communication is more efficient for the battery.
