Fields Created under Channel Manager

When you create a field under the channel >> field group >> fields; the field is not showing on the main field management page as belonging to that group. They are all counted as general fields. When you create it on this page it is OK, just not when you create a field from the channels drill down. You then can’t move the field to the group it should be under.
