If the config override ‘base_url’ is specified in the configuration file, it uses that to create the update form action and when you submit, it redirects you to the frontend.
This either immediately causes errors as the database is not in sync with the new files or if that doesn’t throw an error, it triggers a secure form fail.
For now, just remove the configuration override from system/user/config/config.php if updating.
