Bug #23054 See Comments

Docs produce an error

Version: 3.5.5 Reporter: judahnator

I am following the guide here: https://docs.expressionengine.com/latest/how_to/building_a_simple_news_site.html

My work has asked me to build an EE addon, but I have no experience with the platform. I thought maybe following how-to on setting up a simple site would be a good place to start, but I am getting an error in the “Creating a Channel” section. The error can be seen here: https://holdthis.net/files/15/Screenshot from 2017-04-12 11-51-10.png

I can reproduce this fairly easily. Just follow these steps: 1. Setup a DigitalOcean droplet using their LAMP stack template 2. Upload the free version of EE from https://expressionengine.com/store#ee-core 2.1 I would use the paid version, but I cant afford to pay $299 just to learn how to use the platform 3. Follow the instructions to install from here: https://docs.expressionengine.com/latest/installation/installation.html 4. Follow the steps up to “Creating a Channel” from here: https://docs.expressionengine.com/latest/how_to/building_a_simple_news_site.html

I was able to get this error to occur on two separate servers, following the guides to the letter.

I must say I am a bit less than impressed so far, trying to learn a platform that breaks so easily when following the official docs. I hope this can get resolved soon!

  • Hi Judah!

Did you install the default theme by chance? One of the limitations of the free version (see Compare Features) is the number of Channels you are allowed to create (3). You can either delete some existing channels, or simply install the software without adding the default theme. The default theme does make a nice learning playground for you though, it is essentially a ready-to-go personal blog site with documentation in the templates themselves.
