Aside from the payment and basket functions, almost every other aspect of this site was achievable with the features ExpressionEngine gives you on installation. No custom PHP was required, no modification of core functions or processes; just a lot of careful planning and knowledge of how eecms can function as a framework to support your ideas.

Philip von Nell is a “boutique” importer of wines in the UK, dealing with around 150 labels from around 2 dozen growers. As wine inventory goes, this is a lot more focused than much of the competition, and so it allowed the site to become less about sheer volume of sales and more about a showcase for each bottle.

ExpressionEngine was the natural choice for content management, and Cartthrob was chosen as the ecommerce module as the out-of-the-box features of both were perfect for the client’s needs. The sheer extendability of EECMS and the stability of the platform - as well as the separation of design and content - were also deciding factors.

A lot of emphasis in this project is on the User’s experience and journey through the site, and so because the template structure isn’t set by the software, a completely custom buying process can be (and has been) implemented, guiding the user through the site to conversion.

I was able to easily identify and eliminate any obstacle to buying that other, off-the-shelf solutions make very difficult to remove. Simple functions such as being able to update quantities within the basket without having to type and refresh were added with a few snippets of javascript.
