I’m interested in knowing if EE has been, or is capable of being used, as an enterprise-wide CMS for large educational institutions. If so, can you cite examples?

Scalability and end-user experience are key factors. More specifically, ability to grow to meet an increasingly high-volume of page views, ability to manage 1 to 3 hundred users/publishers efficiently, and preferably with some work flow rules? And is there a “fool-proof,” or simple editing interface with a wysiwyg page analogy (rather than a forms-based interface)?

It’s clear EE is an awesome app. for so many applications. However, its applicability to large scale organization’s web publishing needs isn’t so clear to me.

The short answer, however, is that ExpressionEngine is fully capable of handling that type of load, it is more a matter of server infrastructure and hardware.

You might also view wiki:// Extensions to see the variety in WYSIWYG editors that are available.  There is also the Metaweblog API which would allow you to work with a desktop client and post to EE from that.  You can find a brief list of such tools on our desktop clients wiki page.

That’s quite a range. As Lisa mentioned, scalability won’t be a problem but how many members you have and how you need to manage them (and access to content) could be depending on “exactly” what you need. Access is controlled by member groups and a member can only belong to one group. It’s the only aspect of EE that has affected use in an enterprise environment…intranets for me. As an example: An executive couldn’t belong to the exec group AND his/her department group.
