Email inserting = every 70–75 characters in body text

Hi everyone,

I’ve come across an issue with a client’s website where they’re using Freeform Express to submit form enquiries. When the emails are received, their email software (e.g. Microsoft Outlook) renders them with an = sign every 70–75 characters. The message data appears to be fine when viewing them in the EE addon control panel and making previous submissions, everything seem to be working normally.

We’ve recently upgraded the hosting to a newer server and the issue seem to have started then. I’m guessing it might be an HTML encoding setting in the email client software displaying it differently, or it’s the way the HTML template is being rendered, or it’s the new server?

Could anyone suggest or give guidance to help pinpoint down to what the issue might be, please?

Regards, James

Hi.

That format (with = signs at the end of a line before it gets to 80 characters) is called Quoted Printable. It’s a way of encoding text-only emails so that old email systems can deal with it.

I would suggest that you want to ensure the emails are being sent as HTML not as Plain Text. There might be more than one settings place where this is handled.

I know this isn’t a complete solution, but I hope it helps get you closer.

Hi Travis,

Thanks for your reply.

This provides a starting point to see what the issue could be. I’ll have a look and make sure the emails are sent as HTML instead of Plain Text.

If there are further questions, I’ll let the know EE team know.

Thanks, James
