Allow setting "required" on a field only for certain statuses

When it comes to content entry, I see clients often want to be able to fill in some of the entry, save it, and come back later to finish it. That’s not possible without filling out all the required fields. I’d love to be able to set EE to ignore the required fields unless saving with the status Open. I’m not sure how granular that would need to be, but hopefully you get my drift.
