It seems that more and more developers just stopped supporting their modules. What is going on? I am talking about famous modules that are used all the time or could be used. This is 3rd time this year I bought module, wrote support on official channel of communication for that developer and nothing happened. Then I go through forum and see huge amount of unanswered questions.
Yes, I ‘ve noticed this too, to the point that at the moment I’m future proofing the site that I develop and run myself, so that I can easily upgrade to EE3 when all the addons I need are compatible.
Answering your question, I really don’t know what’s going on but it seems to me that between personal matters, developers branching out to other cmses and the good’ol problem of lack of profitability there aren’t as many active developers as before.
But I really wish that the developers who abandon commercial products would take the time to sell them to a shop interested in continuing the project, like the Cartthrob guys did. I’m thinking of Postmaster here…
Sell them or do the community a real favor and at least open-source them.
Devs, if you wish to discontinue a product and it may not be sellable, PLEASE make a formal announcement and open source the code. Don’t just go dark and leave everyone wondering whether you’re just busy, or the project is actually dead.
It’s quite common for addon developers to abandon their projects, it’s not just EE, it affects all systems that use 3rd party addons - image how many of the who knows how many Wordpress addons have been abandoned?
It’s really just part of the whole lifecycle of this sort of stuff, it happens…
