I’m running an MSM installation with six sites totaling ~113,500 entries and ~370 custom fields.

Most everything I do in the control panel is quick and responsive, except creating new custom fields.

When I click the “Submit” button after setting up the new field’s settings and options, it takes close to two full minutes to return to the field list.

Any idea why this is so painfully slow? Any suggestions for fixing it?

    Thank you,
    Philip Jones

    Hi Philip,

You might be hitting the wall on the number of available columns in MySql with that set up.

Many years ago, we had an MSM install with a lot of custom fields and 30+ websites. We hit the limit and learned a hard lesson, as some of our newly created fields were not fully added to the database.

That post from 2007 will explain it.

So far, I haven’t run into any errors.

And I’ve seen no indication that the fields aren’t being created correctly and completely. It’s just taking a really long time.

    Thanks,
    Philip

MySQL’s ‘Avg_row_length’ for ‘exp_channel_data’ is only 2.8K, so I don’t think this is my problem. Although I certainly won’t rule it out moving forward.

    Thanks,
    Philip

For us it wan’t the Avg_row_length that was the issue, it’s that we actually had over 3,800 rows (not the current 4,640? row limit) and that was enough to really slow down some CP functionality like you are experiencing. This was back in the EE 1.x days though.

I’ll follow this thread though, as I’m curious what your site is struggling with.
