I have a client that I host their 3 domains as subdomains on my account. I currently use the freelance version for my own site and a commercial license for one of their sites (we will be making the other two dynamic). Will the MSM allow me to pick which of the subdomains that we manange while still leaving my freelance version to manage my primary domain?

I know this is probably a simple question just can’t seem to wrap my head around it. I mapped out the domain structure if this helps.

    Hosting organization
    MYDOMAIN.com (primary- has freelance installed)
      |
      |-CustomerSite1.com (Commercial EE)
      |-CustomerSite2.com (Manage through MSM)
      |-CustomerSite3.com (Manage through MSM)
      |
      |-OtherSubdomain.com

    Thanks
    Bryan

    Hi, Brian,

    A few issues here:

    1.  You can not use the MSM to host sites for different clients.  Each client needs their own full license and separate installation.

    2.  Freelancer will not work with the MSM.

So it looks like in this case you’ll need full installations for all of these different sites.

    Does that help?

    Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I was not clear. The three sites that are customer sites are for the same client. He has main company and then two other subsidiaries.

I wish to keep the freelancer just for my site and do not have others to use the MSM with.

So the three subdomains belong to one client and would ideally managed through MSM, while my site is only accessed by me and would stay freelance.

    Does that make sense?

As always Lisa, thanks for your help.

So I reread ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/cp/sites/domainsetup.html and it seems that MSM should work with all three sites being subdomains. Sorry just trying to be clean on my licensing and eliminate obvious setup issues before I get rolling on moving and setting up everything.

Just let me know if I am reading this right.

    Thanks again,
    Bryan

    Hi Bryan,

Yes, this would all work as long as you have a single, Commercial License installation of EE with MSM powering the three subdomains and, separately, your own Freelancer installation powering your site at the main domain. Your only consideration may be to use a cookie prefix on your two installations so that their cookies don’t get mixed up and kill one another’s session.
