Category Order in CP

    This is a site that I migrated from 1.x last year. I’m not experiencing this on other sites from the same build.

    PROBLEM:

    On the Publish/Edit entry screen categories appear to be in no discernible order. I would expect them to respect the order I set in the category management section.

    When I change the order in the Admin | Category Management section (or from the entry) the categories appear fine in the order I set them, but not in the entry itself.

    ATTEMPTING TO FIX:

    I double checked on another install of the same build and the categories work fine there. I looked at the bug report on a similar issue (14821), but this does not appear to be related. I’ve tried multiple iterations of making the change, both attempting to get manual ordering and alphabetical to work.

    SIGNIFICANT FACTs

    1) I looked at the database and for every single category in that category group, the cat_order is listed as 1.

    2) This is the same site I’m having (yet to be resolved) issues with duplicate entries: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/182307/

    3) Shortly after making the migration I tried using the Low Reorder module for that channel. I’ve stopped using it, and though it remains on the server, it’s not installed in EE.

    Hmmm.. that may be what’s causing the problem on the front end. If you reorder on the backend, does the order change in the db?

    Sue, I misspoke. I initially though that cat_order stayed at “1” even if I changed the order, but I double checked it, and it does change upon changing the category ordering to custom. So that’s no longer a significant fact.

    The only thing that I can tell is that categories do not show in alphabetical order in the publish screen, even when selected to do so in category administration. Custom ordering does appear to work fine.

    I also checked this in another 2.14beta install and got the exact same behavior.

    Hi, Bud,

    We’ve seen this in EE 1 some times.  In some cases, re-ording to custom then back to alpha (ie: reversing what you’re doing) can kick-start EE into the proper re-ording.  Can you give that a shot please and see if it helps?  The bug report you mention is fixed in beta, so this should be working.  I’ll give it another shot locally here as well.

    Alright.  I tried to reproduce this.  Loaded the publish screen and re-ordered categories as custom.  Submitted then refreshed public - the sort order was respected.  Back to custom and re-ordered and submitted.  Again refreshed the publish page and the new order was there.

    So let’s see if re-ording kick starts this for you, otherwise we’ll need to continue some troubleshooting.
