Hey Friends, this may be an easy one, but I haven’t been able to find any thing in the docs or forums.

I am moving a site (we’ll call it site A) being run off an single EE installation into a seperate EE install that is running MSM that already has a default site it is running (this can be site B, no pun intended). So essentially i am wanting to take site A and put into Site B’s MSM install creating Site A-new!

I followed the docs about setting up a new domain in MSM, creating a directory and copying the path and index files into it. When I navigate to the directory everything looks good, but I have not figured out how to get my original site (site a) to run of the new MSM site (site a-new). Is this a setting with my DNS? Servers?

Also, when I update the url paths in the new MSM site’s (site A-new) system pref’s (like site, url, url to CP, theme url, etc I lose styling on the CP. How should i set those url’s? Do I use my original url (site A) or the path to where the MSM is located (site B) Like file upload directories, etc…

I hope this stuff makes sense for ya!

I can get you live urls for all this if you want. Just DM me.

    Hi Matthew,

You can’t directly use an existing EE site within an MSM installation in this way. What happens when you have MSM sites is that there is only one database and one set of tables but there are multiple rows in each table to represent the different site’s data. Your existing site may be using the same database as the MSM installation (if it’s on the same server and you’ve specified a different table prefix) but more likely it’s in a different database altogether.

With regards to the themes, it’s perfectly okay to leave the new site’s theme paths the same as the first site and it will work just fine. Alternatively, you will need to copy those assets into appropriate folders for use by your new site.

    Cheers

    Greg

Greg, Thanks for the heads up.

What exactly will I need to do get the new MSM site working with the old sites url? The sites are on the same server. Do I just need to point the URL to the directory where I have my path and index files?

Also, as far as creating file upload directories, will those be relative to the directory where my index and path files are? or will they be relative to my main install of EE?

As Greg says you can’t add in another site this way. It simply isn’t a case of pointing to a URL.

Also, as far as creating file upload directories, will those be relative to the directory where my index and path files are? or will they be relative to my main install of EE?

If this was a new install then they could be either or.

Matthew are you working on this MSM site for a client or is it your own license?
I don’t see an MSM license for yourself. If I am mistaken can you send a quick email to sales@expressionengine to sort things out please?

Further to what John Henry said, do you still need help with importing this site? It’d be like importing any other regular weblog, I am afraid.
