What do you listen to when you code?

I listen to flying lotus, lorn, daft punk, boards of canada, mux mool, aphex twin, jay dee (j dilla), yppah, cold war kids, radiohead, muse, bloc party, tv on the radio, cut copy, digitalism, dj shadow and a few others—i have a huge mixed playlist but i’d say that flying lotus/j dilla are my favorites and most played.

    Anyone else care to share?

Normally either listen to the radio (Absolute Radio) or a random playlist which has a little bit of everything, but mostly alternative/indie/rock (but not heavy rock)

anything with lots of noise (techno, metal) or with lots of talk (rap).. strangely, I find myself more capable to concentrate if there’s lots of noise in my head. Funny side-mark here: it drives me crazy if my co-workers talk or - god beware - whistle… this will break my concentration instantly… And my next-desk-neighbour is a football (soccer) fan.. he sporadically breaks out in fan-songs.. which kills whatever i am doing. Therefor I prefer my headset and lots of techno or metal

ditto. But it has to be old music that I’m already familiar with. New music does the same thing to me that coworker conversation does: causes me to focus more on whats being said/played than the task at hand.

I listen to wfmu because of their archives i can pick the shows i would like to listen to without having to listen to shows i don’t like that much. The greatest thing about the shows is that there are no constraints for the dj, he/she can play any music they like without having to repeat a song every five minutes. For me that last thing was the death of radio for me until i discovered wfmu.

Although i could pause the shows at any moment, i don’t and this breaks up my day in smaller pieces for which i make todo lists based on the duration of the shows; one hour, two hours, three hours or four hours.

So i combine the pleasure of listening to music with managing tasks like the auction house robbery in Hudson Hawk.

Another vote for loud music. Or when I’m in deep wizardry mode, something like this:

I listen to music whenever I solve problems, which is during school (almost all the time) and when I code (also almost the whole time).

I’ve figured that my brain works better when the load is equally distributed on my brain. Ie. the left side of it deals with the problem and the right side analyzes the music 😊

When it comes to the music style, I listen to a different kinds of Melodic/Death/Symphonic/Gothic Metal (Epica, Draconian, Dark Tranquillity etc.).
