Rescuing a Lost Installation

One of the sites I was maintaining for a friend kind of went kerpoot; the site shut down unexpectedly and with no warning, and I’m trying to figure out how I can get her EE site back up and running.

I have a backup of her database, but I don’t have any of the files, and don’t know what version of EE she was running (just that it was old); I tried connecting her database to a new installation of EE but it didn’t work.

I then tried to maybe extract the entries, but couldn’t figure out any easy way to do that and keep them linked to titles/dates/comments etc.

Any ideas on how I might salvage this site?

Do you have any idea what went kerpoot?
Is there any possibility that her host has a complete backup?

One thing you could try is import the database, upload the new files, and run update.php.  That should bring it to a fully updated version.  Obviously keep a backup around.

If that fails with an error, just post over in the installation forum appropriate to the install (core or full tech support) for assistance.

Oooh, I didn’t think of that.. thanks!

I have no hope of getting a backup, the whole host shut down. (And this, my friends, is a prime example of “you get what you pay for”)
