Slow search - 3rd party solutions?

    Hey all,

    Our site has about 1M+ entries and EE search is slowing the site down.  Has anyone tried installing 3rd party solutions?  We’ve been thinking about Autonomy or the custom Google search (the one that would sit on our servers and be customizable).

    Thanks for sharing any insights.

    Hi, perlani - welcome to the forums!

    I’m sorry to hear about the slowness.  Can you clarify if just the search is slow? Or is it slowing down your entire site?

    One option might be a custom google appliance which may be free if you are a non-profit.

    Also, I am going to email you shortly, so please check the email associated with your account.

    Thanks!  I haven’t received the email from you yet - it may be that Solspace is the email contact for our account.  Anyways, from our DBA, here’s a sample slow search:

    # Time: 090313  4:31:34
    # User@Host: gnp[gnp] @  [74.205.124.20]
    # Query_time: 4  Lock_time: 0  Rows_sent: 1  Rows_examined: 1098436
    SELECT
                                    DISTINCT(exp_weblog_titles.entry_id)
                                    FROM exp_weblog_titles
                                    LEFT JOIN exp_weblogs ON exp_weblog_titles.weblog_id = exp_weblogs.weblog_id
                                    LEFT JOIN exp_weblog_data ON exp_weblog_titles.entry_id = exp_weblog_data.entry_id
                                    LEFT JOIN exp_comments ON exp_weblog_titles.entry_id = exp_comments.entry_id
                                    LEFT JOIN exp_category_posts ON exp_weblog_titles.entry_id = exp_category_posts.entry_id
                                    LEFT JOIN exp_categories ON exp_category_posts.cat_id = exp_categories.cat_id
                                    WHERE exp_weblogs.site_id = '1'
                                    AND exp_weblogs.is_user_blog = 'n'
    AND (exp_weblog_titles.expiration_date = 0 || exp_weblog_titles.expiration_date > 1236954690) AND exp_weblog_titles.status != 'closed'
    AND (
    (((exp_weblog_titles.title LIKE 'rthjustice%' )) )
    )
     AND ( exp_weblog_titles.weblog_id = '3' );

    The email address went to your yahoo.com account (associated with this particular forum account), so please do check junk filters.  If that didn’t find it, I’ll re-send through private message, let me know!

    So the speed issue is only when performing a search, is that right? Have you checked out the Google Tools available for this?

    I just spoke with Google and including the 20% nonprofit discount, the Google enterprise search license is 40K which includes some hardware, and 2 year support.

    It’s way beyond our budget.

    Any other suggestions?  BTW, I’m not getting your emails to Yahoo so please email me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

    Hi Perla, you can update your email address in the “Your Control Panel” link at the top.

    There are likely other third-party search services, but I do not have specific recommendations.  Have you considered working with a Pro Net member for further assistance?

    I have spoken to Solspace and they don’t have any other recommendations right now.

    I haven’t spoken to other pro developers.  Is there a discussion forum for the pro developers where I can post this inquiry to them?

    There is not such a discussion forum, but you could certainly go through the portfolios on some of those pages and see if any of them have ideas that might work with your project, and get quotes on those ideas.

    Would Google Site Search not be an option?  I’m not sure why you would need the Google Enterprise Search. =)

    Very little customization available. The search results would not be presented in a sortable way for our users.

    Well, at this point I think that perhaps just googling “custom search solutions” or similar may be your best option; or getting quotes from other pro net members.

    How about trying out Sphinx Search. I’ve heard that it is very very good.

    Best wishes,
