Can someone please tell me why this bit of template code:

looks like this on the webpage?:

My guess is that
“Weblog Management -> Edit Weblog Preferences -> Weblog Posting Preferences -> Automatically turn URLs and email addresses into links?”
is on and it shouldn’t be.

Generally you just want to view the HTML that is outputted by the template to help diagnose these problems.

Also you’re missing a </p> before {if:else}

To correct you template rendering incorrectly.

Set the formatting choice for your custom field to “none” and as philfreo suggests, under Admin > Weblog Management you’ll want to have the “Automatically turn URLs and email addresses into links?” option set to “NO”.
