i installed and setup a Core Version of EE on a local server and starting developing it.  i created a backup of the database using the EE database backup tool.  i’m wondering if its possible to take the .sql document and import it into the 30 Day Demo that i just started.  i can’t find any obvious way of doing this sort of posting the entire SQL statement into the SQL query window.

the SQL file is less than 2mb.  not a lot of data.

is it possible to do an import?  i’m assuming yes because there’s no point in doing a backup if there’s no way to restore it.

    right?

    Hi Brock,

Yes, you can restore from Core to a full version using the steps outlined in the User Guide. You can also restore from the 30-day demo to the full version. The aforementioned instructions assume you are restoring to your own hosted EE installation. Its not possible to update the 30-day demo with outside SQL for security reasons.

i want to take my local data ( .sql file ) and load it into my 30 Day Demo so i can show company executives how EE would be an ideal solution for our intranet needs.

    Hi Brock,

As explained in my previous response, that is not possible due to security reasons. You are welcome to take your local EE Core install and set it up on your own web host so you have a demo to show that way.

    Brock,

Two things to consider in your request.  While EE can do its own backups doing a restore of an .sql file would be handled by an outside tool normally, like phpMyAdmin, command-line, etc.

Also you are running EE core locally, but the hosted Demo is a full version of EE complete with additional modules.  Replacing the hosted demo’s database with your core database will break functionality in the hosted demo as you can imagine.

You would likely want to simply cut and paste your templates into the hosted demo along with your other config changes you want to show to the people you need to.

i understand your security reasons.  however, if you want the decision makers to see EE in its full glory, you may want to make an exception in this case.  they’re not ‘technical’ so when i explain the features that the Member Module brings to what i’m proposing we do with the intranet .... if they can’t see it, they won’t ‘get it’.  the IT Director is pretty much onboard with me but he also said that the decision makers (company executives) will want to see options (Joomla, Drupal, etc).  if for whatever the EE site is ‘hobbled’, they will see that as a strike against it.

the sql file is less than 2mb.  that shouldn’t pose to big a security threat.  we’re not talking about looking over a huge data set for SQL injection and cross site hacking nonsense.

i hope we can work this out.

i was hoping i wouldn’t have to recreate all the blogs and user groups and restrictions

i wish you’d made this clear before blowing $10 on a demo

i understand everything you’re saying.  i would’ve thought that you would have allowed for this contingency (moving from Core to Licensed version).  so i’m surprised to hear that this is such a big hassle.

i’ll do what i can with what i have.  and we’ll see if that’s enough to make an impression on the executives.

Brock, with all due respect, this is your presentation. We’re not compromising our servers for your sales presentation. And as Nevin pointed out above, security isn’t the only consideration. What you want to do isn’t simply a matter of swamping out databases.

I understand your frustration here but really, what Nevin posted above is the way to go. If you and the IT Director both want to use EE, than taking the 10-30 minutes to update your hosted demo is certainly worth your time.

Its extremely easy to move from the Core version to the full version when its hosted on your own web host. But though the 30-day demo feature wise is the same as the full version, behind the scenes its not the same thing. You can’t simply swamp out the Core db to the demo db and expect things to work. But you certainly can go from Core to licensed version easily without recreating any work.

with all due respect this is your product we’re talking about.  and if there’s no upgrade path from Core to Full Version .... well ... that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

    here’s what’s in the database ...

    1 user
    about twelve weblogs
    about twelve user types
    several templates
    other

i’m about to start putting together a joomla equivalent of what i’ve built in EE.  i’ll replicate what i can on the Demo.

Brock, check the email associated with your ExpressionEngine.com account.

And for the last time, there is an easy upgrade path from Core to the Full version. But again, the 30-day demo is not the same under the hood as the downloadable full version even though feature wise they match.
