MSM; is it limited to 3 licenses, or it comes with 3?

I know this is a silly question because I can’t find anyone else who has asked it, and it’s not a FAQ.

    The MSM description reads:
The Multiple Site Manager enables you to create and manage multiple websites from a single ExpressionEngine installation. Up to 3 sites (including your main installation) can be managed. Additional Sites can be purchased once you select the license option below.

Reading that, I understand that only 3 sites can be manages from a MSM install.  Is that correct?

And if I wanted to manage more sites, I could install another instance of MSM on that same domain, and manage 3 more sites that way?

And… there is no renewal fee for the additional site licenses (according to the FAQ) but there IS a renewal fee for the main install, right and upgrading that basically upgrades all sites that use the MSM, right?

No, EE + MSM includes 3 Sites, but you can purchase additional Sites.  You can find the pricing at the bottom of this page.

The Multiple Site Manager costs $199.95 (commercial license) and $79.95 (non-commercial license) and enables you to manage 3 Sites (including your primary site). Additional sites can be purchased on a per-instance basis for $49.95 (commercial license) and $24.95 (personal license).

There is no renewal fee for the MSM Sites.

Is there a limit to the number of sites you can have on one installation? 99? 1000? I am proposing this as a solution to a client with 1 domain and lots of subdomains and they wanted to know what the limit was. I understand that you have to pay an additional $50 per site/subdomain.

    Hi, james,

There is no limit on the number of Sites.  There are a few things you’d want to consider first.

    1) There is currently a limit of a little over 500 custom fields for an installation.  That is explained in this thread; so you’ll need to consider that when figuring this out.

    2) There may be license concerns, I would review our license and License FAQ, as well as the MSM FAQ and make sure that you’re within the license.

Post back if you have any other questions.

It’s just one site with sub-domains for each of the categories of their content. So as far as I know it is perfectly acceptable. We’d be using the MSM and purchasing the MSM add on licenses for any additional domains (beyond the 3 included). That’s the correct usage right? Nothing is being resold or leased or anything like that.
