A client wants his site to feature 3 kinds of memberships each with a different level of access to the site:

    - free membership: access to making comments only
    - 10$ per month membership: access to making comments and restricted articles
    - 20$ per month membership: access to making comments and restricted articles and the forum

The client wants people to be able to buy the memberships on the site.

Is this realistic to do with EE or should I look elsewhere (I’m not a very sophicated programmer)?

    Thanks!

    Hi, Sam,

    Welcome to our community.

Yes, this is possible. You would have 3 member groups, with the appropriate permissions.  You could use the Simple Commerce module to purchase the memberships and have them moved into the correct group on payment.  The only issue is the per month renewals, which would require some custom code. If you are unable to create that, you might consider our Pro Network or job board for assistance.

Lisa, thanks, it’s great to hear that.

Paypal apparently has a service which does monthly billing, so a person would buy a membership and PayPal would completely handle the reoccurring billing itself. When they stop paying, the plan is to take this person out of the system manually. What I need EE to do is to put them in the right group to begin with—the 10$ people into the 10$ group and the 20$ people in the 20$ group. The way I read your answer, I understand that EE can put them in the right group upon purchase, right?

    Thanks!

If it works the way we need this will really take a load off my mind.

Yes, the SCM can put people in a specific user group upon purchase.
