One can create a basic calendar using the weblog module. A full-featured, third-party calendar module is currently under active development.

I think he who is working on it is he who posted that it’s under active development. As a note, you can find a few event calendar examples in our Showcase.
A banner module is also something that can easily be created with a separate weblog, and is how most people handle it. There is no dedicated “banner module” at this time, though. =)

Hm- I do believe Mr. Wilson is working on one 😉. He also did the Reepeat plugin, which allows multiple dates for a single entry in the current calendar.
The included calendar is solid- but it’s not as feature rich as something like iCal. It’s part of the weblog module- so you can check try it out using either the free ‘Core’ download or the hosted trial (which has the full version of EE)- see the Try ExpressionEngine page for access to both options.
There isn’t a banner module and I don’t recall a 3rd party one in development. I’ve integrated it with existing banner programs and depending on your needs, it may be easy to ‘roll your own’. If you’re selling third party packages and want to give them control panels and tie into a payment gateway, then I’d go with integrating a third party one. Just depends a bit on how extensive you need things to be. (I’ve used phpadsnew - free, open source, as well as hosted ones. Integration isn’t particularly difficult.)
