I am working on a bid for a potentially large project and have a few questions about EE.  FYI, I have used EE on two different sites so far (http://www.amberrhodes.com and www.straydoghaus.com) and was pleased with both and will be working on a third soon.

1) The site has the potential to have a lot of traffic and will require subscriptions to access 98% of the site content.  Can expression engine handle 100,000 + members to a site?

1a) If so is Engine Hosting the right host for such volume?  How will it handle significant spikes such as users coming to view a live event at the same time (live event content streamed through a separate host/service)?

1b) The subscriptions need to be paid and I am looking at aMember Pro (http://www.amember.com/) to help with that.  Any feedback on if this is a wise idea?  I have no experience with them.

2) Are any of you strictly professional web developers or part of web dev shop?  If so leave a url or contact information as I may require additional support.  Located in NYC is a plus but not a requirement.

Absolutely - this is far more about the hardware and server infrastructure than about EE, EE can handle this quite well.

These questions are best sent to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) - they do handle this, in fact, they run many Mac sites that often get bombarded for live events, so they have plenty of real experience with this, but please do contact them to discuss the particulars.

Hopefully someone wil comment here as I do not have experience with aMember.  I know we have had members use the simple commerce module to do this - and the initial subscription is easy, it is just the renewing/recurrance that needs a bit of custom work.

Just posted in another thread an overview that may assist with your question about EngineHosting.  Yes, we have a lot of clients that do large traffic spike events.  As Lisa mentioned we have a number of Apple (MacOS/and iPod) related web sites that we host that do live coverage events for keynotes and special events.  Not too long ago a client with a very popular religious web site do live coverage for a big event in another country over I believe a 5 or 7 days period.  Each day their traffic, from visitors globally, would skyrocket for most of the day on each day of the event.
