Importing Data From Other Sources To Create Entries

I want to create an online catalogue of all my books.  I’ve been playing around and creating a new weblog and custom fields for it, eg, author, ISBN etc.  On my PC I use a little program called Book Collector to keep a record of all my books which is capable of exporting data.  Would it be feasible for me to import this into the EE database to create new entries?  I had a look at the db and can see I would need to update at least 2 tables, one for the entries and one for the category.  Is this feasible?  Would I need to update any other tables?

On a different note, for now I’m planning on buying the one EE for my blog site however at some point in the future I would like to get MSM and use EE for my family site, would I just purchase MSM when I can afford it or do I have to get MSM and EE together?

    Thanks

Feasible - yes. Tedious?  Definitely.  😉

You’ll need to look through the EE dB structure - enter some data in the EE interface and then see what gets updated in the table.

You’ll want to look at weblog_data, weblog_titles, and category_posts mainly—after setting up your weblogs, fields, and category structures first, so you can get all the foreign key value that tie the tables together.

How many books do you have?  Sometimes it’s just faster to re-key—especially if there’s other data changes to make (category or field structures etc).

    ShelaghG - Welcome to EE.

Yes, it is feasible. There is a third party extension called CSVGrab that will allow you to import entries from a .csv file.

I use it on client sites these days when I need to import data.

Michael, give it a try. 😊

Thank you, I’ll take a look at that utility.  I have several hundred books so I start crying at the thought of entering them by hand 😉

Thank you so much for pointing me in the direction of this plugin.  I just imported 500+ books in the blink of an eye.  It’s brilliant!
