The excerpts in my search results don’t contain italics where they should. Is this expected behavior?  Is there any way to alter it?

Yes- it’s intended.  The search excerpt is stripped of tags in order to prevent unclosed markup from occurring when the word limit cuts in.  But- I’m thinking a note in the docs with regard to that would be a good idea to prevent confusion.  I’ll give the crew a ‘heads up’ on it.

But- make sense what’s going on there?

yes, it does - do you think the typography plugin would add the italics back in?  That plugin is like witchcraft to me, I don’t understand how it works at all 😊

Heh- yep, that’s why the word limit issue is tricky.  The excerpts are parsed as xhtml- but the tags are all stripped- hence the losing the italics.  But there should be p tags- due to the xhtml formating.

Hm.  Could use one of the plugins to limit the size of the excerpt- then just use a custom field- limited via plugin.  Only problem is- both word limit and word limit plus lack a great way of dealing with the markup issue.  The one plugin that does- will close tags for you- is filter html.  But it’s discontinued and won’t work on all server setups.

I think I personally?  Would go with the excerpt for now- and put in an FR for allowing the markup to remain.

Yep, I totally get it.  Thanks for the thorough explanation.
