I dont know the admin username and password for a site on my local machine. How can I set the username and password to something (so I can log in) with the phpmyadmin interface?
Thanks

Hiya,
If you go into the exp_members table and find the Super Admin user member_id = 1 and edit it you should be able to place your password in plain text into a field there but just make sure to choose the encryption that is being used on your site from the drop-down left of that field.
That will then convert whatever you place into the field in plain text into a password able to be used by the system.
Hope that helps a bit.
Best wishes,
Mark

Defiantly useful, I think im nearly there.
Ive round the row. All the passwords are shows as a long string of characters. When I change it to something like ‘123’ and try and log in it doesn’t work. Im assuming this is an encryption issue, but I cant see where to change or view my encryption settings.
Thanks

Hiya,
Does your PHPMyAdmin look anything like the image below?
If so then next to the field that contains the long string of characters there should be a drop-down which should say Function at the top of the column. In there you should find the encryption techniques MD5 / SHA1. You will need to choose the correct one for your site and then you should hopefully be good to go.
Alternatively if you have a place on your site where you can get to the members section then you should be able to use the Forgot Password link too.
Hope that helps a bit.
Best wishes,
Mark

Yes my screen does look like that. If I click on Function, I cant then see the encryption techniques.
Sadly the local site isnt set up with email so the account recovery feature doens’t work.

In the screenshot above, you’re inserting a new record—what if you click Browse, then click the pencil icon near the member you want to edit? You should then have a dropdown select list near all of your fields, under the “function” column heading, that will include options for SHA1 / MD5.
Type “123” in the value field, select either SHA1 or MD5 (I believe EE uses SHA1 by default), and save the entry. You should then be able to sign in.

As Ryan has mentioned above you are inserting an entry here and not modifying an existing one. If you take a look at my screenshot and yours then you’ll see they’re not the same as you don’t have the function drop-down there and also your screenshot shows you are inserting an entry too.
If you do as Ryan has mentioned above and I mentioned above too then this should hopefully work for you.
Best wishes,
Mark

Could you show us a screenshot of the pencil icon and surrounding page that you’re clicking on please?
A pencil icon should as far as I’m aware always take you to editing an entry and not creating a new one so if that’s the case I’m not too sure what is going on there. Might be worthwhile re-installing PHPMyAdmin on your system if that’s a possibility?

Hmm that’s truly odd. I’ve never experienced that before. It should definitely be editing the entry.
When you hover your mouse over the pencil icon do you get Edit showing or something else?

Yes, I get ‘Edit’ text.

Then there’s definitely something wrong with your PHPMyAdmin install and the only thing I can advise would be to re-install it if that’s a possibility?

Whoa! Let’s back up a bit.
EE stores passwords in SHA1, you can put in an MD5 password, but not plain text.
There are some third party tools that will allow you to type in a plain text password and return either SHA1 or MD5. I’d suggest that.
Or see: http://eehowto.com/index.php/howto/articles/howto-modify-my-password-using-phpmyadmin

Sue what I’m suggesting is that you can place the password into the field as plain text as long as you select MD5 or SHA1 (depending on what your site is set to use) in the functions drop-down.
This then converts what you have placed in the field as plain text into the encrypted version which is stored in the database. You’re absolutely right that plain text passwords won’t work but that’s not what I was suggesting here.
