Oh, for a moment I thought a Leaner & Meaner ExpressionEngine actually meant a good working File Browser and File Manager.

There is indeed a direct correlation, moonbeetle. Previously, each control panel theme had its own set of very similar (but not quite the same) View files, meaning every control panel change needed to be made to every theme.

Now that there is (by default) one master set of views, changes need only be made once and over 400 largely redundant files have been removed. This groundwork was necessary to efficiently tackle improvements to the areas you mentioned.

In other words, it’s the first step towards greater things to come. But it will also have some nice immediate side-effects that we wanted to go ahead and share now.

Woo hoo!!!  This is something I’ve been wanting for a long, long time. Will this also mean that third-parties can distribute custom CP themes?

How about leaner meaner forum themes - those are impossible to customize quickly or easily and there is essentially no documentation anywhere on how to do so.

Hence my crafty question asking what the build number will be…

    Steve,

Hah! I saw through that but its humour wore off as I was typing my reply 😊

Any idea when this is coming out? There are couple bugs (reported, and they have the status ‘fixed in next release’) which have become CRITICAL for my client. I’m going to need to spend a few hours finding work arounds for these, unless this is going to come out, say, this week, then I could maybe persuade my client to hold tight a few days for this new version.

Emily, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with links to the particular fixed for next release bugs you’re talking about, and we’ll have someone from the development team get in touch with you to provide one-off fixes for right away.

+1 Enquiring minds want to know. Can we distribute custom themes based on modifications to the default theme, or would we have to rewrite all the default code and styles?

Yes, and no need to rewrite anything. Another new feature in this realm is support for an “override” stylesheet. If present, EE will load override.css from your theme near the end of the process.

Combined with the cascading behavior, this means your custom theme could consist of only one file - my_theme/css/override.css - containing style tweaks to the default theme.

    Awesome!

Will other CSS and images work the same way as the PHP files? (i.e., anything you don’t provide is provided by the default theme) Or do they override the default theme only?

This is a great step in the right direction, IMO…although I still wish EL would hire a designer so theming the control panel wouldn’t be such a big deal. 😉
