Communicate module sending duplicate emails to same address

Instructions seem to indicate that Expression Engine Communicate module (with Mailing List) will weed out and restrict send to one address. I sent out an email to 500+ for first tiem this evening and received 5 emails addressed to same email. I went in and viewed Mailing List and it does show my email address listed 5 times. Apparently the mailing process does NOT weed out duplicates.

How do I turn on this duplicate weeding effort for future mailings?

    From a newbie
    (meaning detailed instructions, please!)

I’m not sure EE checks for dupe emails in different lists.

Were these email addresses in the same list?

Can you point me to the docs where it says that bit about “will weed out and restrict send to one address”? We may need to revise. Thanks!

I was sending to just one list. Should EE still restrict mailing to one per address? I believe my finding about ‘weed out and restrict to one address’ was off an answer I asked previously on your forum. Please advise.

I was mistaken. Just found the old thread and it did say EE doesn’t have that capability.
The instructions on exporting the list (to clean it up) is above my head. I’m not a programmer.
Can you advise how I can track down and eliminate duplicates within a single list?

How large is the list? Is manually doing it, out of the question?

The list is just under 500 names. There seems to be no way to sort so I’m concerned if duplicate is on other page (screens) - would need to sort in alphabetical order, in order to catch and delete the duplicates. Any suggestions?

DavSam - there shouldn’t be names stored in there, just email addresses. How did the data get in there?

When I say ‘names’, I mean records, in other words list has under 500 email addresses.

These are email signups through FreeForm sign up form on website, and by adding using Freeform, I added the email addresses through Mailing list>Batch Subscribe/Unsubscribe function.

Personally, I’d take the whole list as a text file, sort it alphabetically and weed out any duplicates, then use the batch Subscribe function. Makes sense? Should take the better part of a minute.

How do I “take the whole list as a text file”? The list shows 100 addresses at a time in this format:

Record #    email address     (IP Address)

I corrected the link in my posting above. It shows you a way to export your mailing list with an SQL query.

    Hi Ingmar,

I can not make SQL query as I’m not a programmer.

How do I sort and delete duplicates? Sign ups were through FreeForm so there are additional fields in addition to the person’s name and email address that needs to be kept together?

DavSam, did you look at the link Ingmar provided? You create a template with the code in the wiki article, and view the template.

I normally use a text editor to remove duplicates. It depends on what tools you have to sort and remove duplicates.

Where is the wiki article? I don’t see it on this thread.
