I use Vim and Gedit, and it’s great. It’s easy to use for a student like me. Before we use Dreamweaver in school.

I just recently switched to Sublime Text 2 and I never looked back.

Before I was a user of gEdit (Linux) E (Windows) and Textmate (Mac).

Was using RapidPHP but 2011 version was slower than 2010 version, didn’t do what was promised and seems to not be advancing at all… so just moved to phpdesigner - loving it so far. Would like a few more bits on it, but not 100% needed 😊

I used to Eclipse+Vrapper for several years, but after two month using Sublime Text 2 (despite its vintage mode still not as good as it should) i must to say that ST2 was the best editor for me right now. Its smarter, light, straigh-forward, and intuitive. Usage of macro become alot simpler, snippet will make you more productive and (imo, the best part) if something goes wrong in the midle of your work (the electricity go out or your computer crash) you will see the exact files in its last state just like last time you see them.

Its really like having a second wife that make a cup of tea in the morning, and a glass of coffe in the night, available for you 24 hours a day.

    on mac,

i used to be a textmate person (still am on small things) but i learned later on in life that those bulky editors that you talk about are things that speed things up for you. what i use is Komodo (which is lightweight for me) and netbeans.

reason why i use these is as follows:

    - intelisense ( when i type $this-> (a dropdown shows up of all my defined methods, variables, etc..)
    - subversion/git
    - ability to have more than one project open at one time. great for multi tasking
    - code gets highlighted when i mistype them or miss a ) or a “
    - code collapse ( makes many lines of code more easier to digest)
    - code/tag completion

those are just a few that i can recall to why i use komodo or netbeans.

I used to be like you where i tried them all and thought they were too bulky and liked simplicity like textmate or notpad++
but i regret it now, i was so narrow minded, once you enter the world of complex applications texmate/notpad++ or related is going to make your life very hard. Plus i use code coloring i hate a white background. for komodo check this page out.
    http://www.kolormodo.com/

    it makes life much easier.

you just have to try and be open minded with netbeans or komodo , its not all that bad. you will see how it will help you and you would be wishing u did it much earlier.

Mat, I’ll take your experience for myself 😊 Been using RapidPHP for some years now, now on version 2011 too and I want to try something new and the price seems quite convenient. Something to miss from RapidPHP? It mentions CI integration which would be awesome.

I just bought phpDesigner 7 for my web development. It is absolutely amazing. I give it two thumbs up.

It does everything the previous posters talked about and more. About $40 personal use / $95 commercial but well worth it.

I love its code hinting. I LOVE its codehinting. Simple, good interface (compared to many of the ones out there), fast and efficient, and automatic codehinting for all includes (including javascript as well). No further configuration necessary, no plugins necessary - just tell it your site root and you will have codehinting for every function and method called in your program.

Is there a way to auto upload to ftp server on save in phpdesigner ?

I was using aptana studio it’s pretty slow comparing to phpdesigner but it has auto-upload on change to ftp function.
