How to limit which status users can edit an entry

I’m using Solspace’s stand alone edit form plugin and was wondering if there is any way to limit users from setting a status to closed. I want them to be able to edit the status of all entries, but i don’t want them to be able to change it to a closed status. Only open, or whatever other value I have in there.

I know how to keep users from editing entries with a closed status, but I want to be able to limit users from editing entries TO a closed status.

Is this even possible?
