I plan to purchase the commercial license.  I am not seeing info on how to set up a test environment.  Will I need the multisite license if I want both a test and production environment?

Hi, DeeCee - welcome to the forums!

You can set up a non-public installation to test with, that is the most common way to do it.

I am not seeing info on how to set up a test environment.

It’ll all depend on your needs and experience and capability. Many Mac users set up EE sites in MAMP. I’m sure there are similar test environments for PC users.

Thanks, Lisa - when you say non-public, it can still be on the server, correct?  When I buy the commercial license, will I be able to have the commercial functionality (photo, email) on my PC?  So, ideally, I would like to have full capabilities - development on PC, test on server (which would not be available to the public) and production on server.  Can I do all that with a single license?

    Thanks for any direction!

It can still be on the server but it would need to be offline (you can set a system to offline and still allow certain member groups to see it) or behind a password protection, otherwise not “public”.

As RonnieMC said, you could install a copy locally on your machine.  There is a program called XAMPP for the PC that makes this fairly easy, giving you a full, encapsulated dev environment to install into.

You can do all of this with a single license.

Hi Lisa, I’m also looking into developing a site thats already live (http://www.schnappsbarruapehu.com) so will need a place to develop it. In your opinion, what is the simplest way to develop a new site with EE (whilst learning it in the process).

Also, I’m not quite sure how the EE installation works (I don’t have experience installing software on servers at all), when installing it on a server, does it get installed site-wide or can it be installed in a folder with a site under development with the original website still running in the folder above?

    Cheers,
    Mhairi

My personal preference is to develop in the root with index.php renamed to something like ee.php. That is purely a personal preference; a sub-folder is equally easy to setup.

You can install it in the root (which would be for something like example.com) or in a sub-folder.  Either way works.

Thank you for your quick reply, v much appreciated 😊

My personal preference is to develop in the root with index.php renamed to something like ee.php.

As I already have a website running in the root I have to develop the new one with EE in a sub folder.

When I’m ready to go live, will I be able to simply delete the old website from the root and copy the files from the sub folder (testing site) to the root?

    Cheers,
    Mhairi

If you rename index.php you don’t have to develop in a sub-folder; that’s why I rename it. =)  But a sub-folder is equally attractive, really.  They’re about the same.

You wouldn’t delete it, you’d follow these instructions.

    Hi Lisa,

I now have successfully installed EE on the server (and it really was very easy!) I have now logged in to the control panel and see that EE version 1.6.7 is available, whereas I have just installed 1.6.6. So, I’m going to install the upgrade. After I accepted the user agreement and started the dowload, it seemed to download the file and the supporting documents correctly, however, when I went to unzip the folders, they were empty. Please advise, perhaps you could email the files to me?

    Many Thanks,
    Mhairi
