Moblog vs. Verizon - How to make it work and what youll have to live with

Allrighty then, this has been a royal pain for me and since you’re here, I’ll assume you’re having as much fun as I did.

My goal: Save you ten bucks at 10 cents per test..

The only thing that wouldn’t go away in GALLERY posts were 2 or 2 ® things (depending on your charset).  Even with the exact same exclusion text, those remain on gallery posts.  They are tiny and in my opinion, not worth losing any more hair over.

The PHP Error

I don’t think you’re ever going to get rid of this while using PIX-FLIX:

Warning: mb_convert_encoding() [function.mb-convert-encoding]: Unable to detect character encoding in /route/to/your/system/modules/moblog/mod.moblog.php on line 2473

Consolation

The Default Debugging Setting in
CP Home ›  Admin ›  System Preferences ›  Output and Debugging Preferences is set as visible to SuperAdmins only.  Meaning, if you include the Check Moblog Tag in a main template, no one but you can see that irritating message.  The bit I’ve decided to live with.  You could also just turn debugging off.

Why is this even an issue?

I’m not certain but I believe Verizon’s additional stuff included in your pix messages is in multiple encodings.  It’s just a theory based on the fact that the Moblog Module is set up to auto-detect the character set.  Verizon seems to be the only provider able to confuse the module.  Evidence?  Lack of any issues for any other provider, anywhere.  Even Lisa Wess said it was fixed as a pleasant side effect of switching providers.

That said, don’t blame the module, after hours and hours of maddening digging, I decided the module was created with the same excellence as EE & I’ll stop right there.

The Fix:

I don’t understand it, but this chopped up version of the PIX message text is the only way I was able to 100% exclude it.  Simply copy and paste it exactly as it is.

This message was sent using PIX-FLIX Messaging service from Verizon Wireless!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If using

UTF-8 as your default character set, use the above.  If you’re using ISO-8859-1

then change:

to

®

I’ve noticed that the copy/paste action occasionally skews those two symbols.  After you’ve pasted and saved, double check to make sure theres not an A with a little ` above it or something else in front of the symbol.  It will mess it up and you’ll see 2 of either of the above symbols on top of your image depending on your character set. WEBLOG only, with GALLRY they come up no matter what.

I truly hope this helps someone.

My nick is Richard the Vague for a reason.  Sadly I can’t make guarantees of clarity but I’ll be happy to take any feedback you have.

Afterthoughts:

Ran across this and it seems to be a decent discussion on UTF-8 vs. ISO-8859-1
