Setting BBEdit to .php css templates

If you prefer to edit EE templates in BBEdit, you may find that you can’t use your “Edit Tag” or Palette features. This is particularly true with your style sheets.

EE exports external template files with the extension .php. This is because EE allows you to include EE tags in these templates, including the style sheet. BBEdit, however, doesn’t automatically associate the .php extension with CSS files.

To set BBEdit to recognize the .php extension so you can use your CSS palette features,

1. Click BBEDit in the top menu bar.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Select Languages from the left-hand menu.
4. Scroll through the “Suffix mappings:” menu in the lower, right-hand box.

If you don’t see a .php in the list:

1. Click ADD.
2. Type .php in the Suffix box.
3. Choose CSS from the Language drop-down menu.
4. Make certain the “Neither” radio box is checked.
5. Click on ADD.

If it won’t let you add the extension, it means it’s already somewhere in the Suffix mappings list and you’ll need to choose to change it. Follow the directions below.

If .php is already mapped to another Language, you can change it either permanently or temporarily.

1. Click CHANGE.
2. Type .php in the Suffix box.
3. Choose CSS from the Language drop-down menu.
4. Make certain the “Neither” radio box is checked.
5. Click on CHANGE.

Now BBEdit will let you use your CSS and the greatest of all, “Edit Tag,” features on you EE external template files.
