How do you “set permissions” on files and directories?

Most FTP programs used to upload files to a web server will give you the ability to “set permissions”. You’ll normally find a “permissions” menu item which will open a dialog box with nine checkboxes. Different combinations of these nine boxes will give you different permissions.

Typically you will highlight the file or directory you want to set permissions on, then open the permissions menu, where you’ll select the appropriate checkboxes.

For example, to set permissions to 666, you might select the following:
