Is there any option to Close or Unpublish Category Instead of Delete them ?

I hardly delete any database I entered.

No, there are no status options for categories like in weblog entries.

I am not sure what you are asking for. Categories just give structure to your data, deleting them doesn’t delete any data. If you want to keep them around, “empty” if you will, just don’t use them (any more).

Is this possibly because you don’t want someone placing any new entries / items into those categories but you still want to have whatever entries / items you have already assigned to those categories in place?

Yes Mark, that’s the answer.

And Ingmar, I can “empty” them but if I make query categories - the “empty” categories will still show. I know I can use categories= “not4”, something like this, but the situation become problematic if the category has parent - child categories relationship.

And Boyink, I thought so. So, I guess the only way to deal with that is to delete them, right?

I don’t think there is any way to do this other than creating an extension but that would be quite a weird one to make I reckon.

Actually I haven’t tried this and not sure if it will work or not but perhaps you may be able to create a new category group and assign that to the weblog and un-assign the category group you originally had there. The existing entries in the weblog (if I am thinking this through correctly) would still (hopefully ) be assigned to the first category group and would still show up on the site wherever you use categories.

I could be wrong on this as it is past midnight here but just a thought process. Would be easy enough to test though.

Mark, why would I never thought about that!!! Perhaps because this long hour lack of sleep. I think that’s a clever solution to create “Dump Category” to store any entry that is not needed anymore and those category will never be called in the template.

Well if it works (which hopefully it does) then it is quite neat I agree!
Although I would wouldn’t I?

Let me know if it does work as I didn’t unfortunately get time to test this one out. Also if any of the moderators know of a reason why this shouldn’t be done then that would be great. I can’t see a reason why you couldn’t do this but I could be missing something important somewhere.
