html button errors

In one of my local dev sites when I try to use the html buttons in the publish field I get the following error:

in order to use these buttons you must first place your cursor in a field

These buttons work in other installations on my dev server as well as my live sites, but not on this particular install - is there a setting somewhere that I need to adjust?

Sean:

Have you made any changes to the buttons?  You have first placed your cursor in a field, right?

No changes and yes I did place a cursor in a field.

disabling the non-functioning markitup extension fixed my problem.
